Eliots most famous play, a poetic religious drama based on the murder of Thomas à Becket, was commissioned for the 1935 Canterbury Festival. It used ritualistic devices to dramatize the murder, among them a chorus and a long set-piece sermon delivered by Becket at the climax of the play.
