Resumen

From out of the shadow cast by the Civil War, emerged three unique American voices. Herman Melville explored the effect of the war on America’s youth and the death of heroism in a series of intense narrative poems, which are represented here along with his later, more introspective verse. A similar strain of loss marks the work of Frederick Goddard Tuckerman, who was also grieving for the death of his wife, and whose haunting lyrics were influenced by his friendship with Tennyson. Two-time Pulitzer prize-winner Edwin Arlington Robinson’s work was characterized by his masterly use of the sonnet form and his penetrating character study. His most famous poems are gathered here alongside some less familiar verse.
